Pym's Daily Word Square Tactics: The Last Word
Tuesday, 11th February 2025
In English, words end most commonly with a certain subset of letters; for instance there are many words ending in an E. Because the Pym's Daily Word Square Puzzle dictionary contains plural nouns and past tense verbs, you'll also see many S and D endings. On the other hand, there are letters which rarely end English words. V, Q and J endings are nonexistent, and you'll rarely see a U or a Z.
Because the last word - the one on the right and bottom of the grid - is made up of the last letters of all the words, it will be comprised of the most common word-ending letters throughout. You'll often find words like SENSE and SENDS here. On the other hand, you won't find V, Q or J on the last row, and rarely will you see U or Z there.
Normally you'd leave the bottom/right word till after you've guessed some of the others, but because you can exclude so many letters from it, and because so many others are very common, you can often take a good guess at it after maybe one letter has been filled in.
For the curious, the table of the number of words ending in each letter, from most to least common and taken from the game's dictionary, is as follows: s:921 e:420 y:283 d:262 t:233 r:184 l:141 n:125 h:124 k:102 a:50 p:44 m:39 o:37 g:37 f:26 c:26 w:18 i:10 b:9 x:8 z:2 u:2 v:0 q:0 j:0.
