The second beta test version of Star Cadre: Combat Class has been released to the beta testers today. It incorporates bug fixes, and some suggested tweaks to functionality. The full list of changes is as follows:

1. Fixed key handling on the title screen.

2. Refined the title screen image (and manual cover). The title screen still needs better dithering, however.

3. We found at least one keyboard that handles cursor keys in an odd manner, sending the codes for the top row 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys when num lock is activated. So these keys are accepted for movement in addition to the cursor keys.

4. Menu default changes: IF pointing the cursor at the current unit, and the current unit is injured, the default menu option is Heal; when pointing at a non-adjacent unconscious enemy, the default menu option is now Attack.

5. It is no longer possible to heal an enemy. It is still impossible to heal an unconscious comrade who is buried under downed enemies, though.

6. Partially healing a unit now shows a percentage health in the log message.

7, Dead units now have a little skull icon so you can tell the between them and units that are merely unconscious.

8. There's now a fist animation for unarmed combat.

9. The stats of enemy units are no longer shown during the computer's turn.

There are still some outstanding changes to make before the game is ready for release, but there wasn't time to implement them before the activation period for the first beta version ended, so they'll need to wait for beta version 3.

You can keep up to date with the game at the Star Cadre: Combat Class web page.
